Asansol is the second largest city in West Bengal, after Kolkata. The city has a population of over one million people. This coal-mining industrial center is located in Damodar River Valley.
The city's economy is primarily based on the coal and steel industries. Asansol is an important educational hub, acting as the center for the entire population of the coal belt from Dhanbad to Ranigunj
Asansol is considered to be the major hub for manufacturing steel industry, thanks to IISCO which is considered to be SAIL's major investment. Although it is located in Burnpur, which is just couple of kilometers away from Asansol. Furthermore, in Asansol majority of the population of working class in the Government sector.
Today Asansol is not considered as the second biggest city in West Bengal ,if we see in terms of population then we can reach to this type of a conclusion but if we see the overall development in terms of growth in the IT sector ,real estate ,hospitals ,entertainment hubs ,plazas ,industries ,business and the most important infrastructural growth then we will see that DURGAPUR is second followed by SILIGURI and then we can name Asansol ,if anyone is aware of the type of developments happening in DURGAPUR then one can see that companies like DLF,SHAPOORJI PALLONJI along with many shoppping malls are making forays into Durgapur ,new hospitals ,branded hotels ,educational institutes are coming up ,its becoming a boom town and a bussiness friendly city for all the upmarket companies ,the same story is with Siliguri but the communication and infrastructure is not so good in North Bengal

The development work carried out by ADDA for both Asansol and Durgapur, are splendid. I am waiting for that day, when these two twin towns will become mega cities..as is the plan by ADDA.With the proposal to build an airport at Andal, that day seems not to be far away.
Well Asansol is the second largest city in West Bengal.Asansol is not lagging behind in any respect.Shopping malls like The Galaxy,Asansol Centrum and many more are in the pipeline alongwith some well known multiplexes.Multi Speciality hospitals like BP Poddar Hospitals and Medica Synergie will open its branches here. One dental college will be opened soon.Branded hotels are also in the list.Vedanta aluminium is ready to open its new plant in Asansol within a couple of years.Videocon will also open its new steel plant in Asansol.Shristinagar-the new asansol will be comprising of residential apartments, bungalows,Amusement park, clubs, shopping mall with multiplex, offices and an IT park.Big banners like NK realtors will construct the Sugam park which will be a residential complex............So my question is that is Asansol lagging behind in any respect?????

India has always fascinated me for different reasons. The vastness of its culture, the diversity of people’s opinions and the limitations of its vision. Despite our diversity, we need to have a collective vision. India is not a country of four metropolis or a couple of high-tech cities. This nation of a billion people has 29 states and 6 union territories. We have 35 state and territorial capitals. How much do we know about each of these important cities?
Professionally I am a graphic designer from Bombay, India. In 1987, I co-authored a book on Corporate India, but my desire to throw a wider net and pick up much more information remains intact. I want my people from every city and every state to write and photograph details and information that would be interesting to the viewers around the world. We have so much to talk about and so much to share - this medium and this technology can help fulfill our collective dreams.
