Surat is called the diamond city and is home to 3.6 million people. Located on the left bank of Tapti River, the city is largely known for its textile and diamond business. Three-quarters of the world's diamonds are cut and polished here.
In 2006, city saw a devastating flood and the water level reached more than 20 feet in some parts of the city. Nearly 80 percent of the entire city was under water.

Surat,which itself is symbol of progress and business centers was ruled by various foreign countries like British, Arabians, Mughals and Portuguese.Surat which was major port for pillgrims going for hajj to mecca has seen many upheqavals in its history.
Before 12th centuray Surat was ruled by Jains.But later Arabs invaded here and started settling smaller hamlets.Intitianly Arabs came here as traders.There was good rade links between Surat and Arabs.Main trades of Surat was porcelain, silk and spices with China, Malacca and Sumatra and other eastern countries.Local lore says that Surat was called Suryapur in 15th-16th century.Till 18th centuray Surat was center of business and had good trade links with many eurpoean and eastern countries.But later Bombay grew as major economic power and Surat left Behind.Many historian believe that 'Gopi' a powerfull businessman,settled here in Surat during 1491-1521.Slowly many business man fllowed his footstep and Surat grew as strong economic center of India.In this way, 'Gopi' is called patron of Surat.
Seeing economic properoity of Surat many eurpoean countries started trade with Surat.It was Surat In all over India that British chose to make their firt fort.The British set up a fort was set up in 1612.Once they setteled their business here East India Company gave trade rights here.Apart from that even maratha Ruler,Chatrapati Shivaji raided Surat in 1664.And in 1800, British conquered Surat completly.
Seeing busines prosperity need of education was felt. And hence in 1826 many Gujarati and English schools were set up. In 1852, and later Surat gained the status of municipality of Gujarat.
if local lore is to be believed in 1901 a boatload came herre from Afica and set up firat diamond business here.23rd Indian National congress session was setup herer in 1907 in Surat.It is same Surat where moderates and nationalists divided into two groups.Surat is not intact from Communal violance in 1992 Hindu Muslim riot took place and many pepples lost their lives.Surat has also seen many natural calamities, like earthquake, and floods.
